Dave East recorded his latest album at one of Pablo Escobar’s Colombian stash houses.

Dave East is a Grammy-nominated rapper from Harlem, New York.

East began his career in 2010 and released his eighth mixtape, “Black Rose” in 2014 which gained the attention of New York rap legend Nas.

Nas signed East to his record label, Mass Appeal Records, which is affiliated with Def Jam Recordings. During an interview, East sat down with Ebro Darden for Apple Music’s Rap Life discussing the differences between a mixtape and an album and his experience recording his latest album in one of Escobar’s drug cartel-controlled properties in Medellín.

With a mixtape, he approaches it like an album, "I have a fanbase that I’m doing it for and it's more street driven". For an album, "I want to do more global or bigger types of records because there’s money involved and I’m presenting to the label".

East revealed he recorded a large portion of his new album “Fortune Favors the Bold”.

“We had the studio set up right in the crib,” East said. “We actually stayed in one of Pablo’s stash houses.”

East is not inspired by the destruction the notorious Colombian Narcos cartel has caused but is influenced by their style.

“Pool inside the crib, some flavor, flavor, flavor crib,” East said. “But yeah, I did maybe 12, 13 records off the album in that house, right in the crib.”

The Harlem native had the opportunity to meet Escobar’s brother while at the house, who has one eye because of a jail accident.

East’s Fortune Favors the Bold album released by Def Jam Recordings on July 14th and features Ty Dolla $ign, Coi Leray, G-Eazy, Tyga, Kid Capri, Cordae, Ghostface Killah, and more.
